Matthew Lawrence Hayden an Australian cricketer.
He was educated at Marist College in Ashgrove and he is an Australian and Queensland representative cricketer.
Hayden (nicknames: Haydos, Unit) is a powerful and aggressive left hand opening batsman, known for his ability to score quickly at both Test and one day levels. He is particularly proficient when hitting down the ground. Hayden currently holds the record for the highest scores made by an Australian batsman in both the Test (380) and One Day International (181 not out) arenas.
National Selection Panel chairman Andrew Hilditch has left the door open for Matthew Hayden to continue his Test career despite his omission from Australia's one-day and Twenty20 squads announced in Sydney on Thursday.
But Hilditch insists the 37-year-old's career in the five-day arena is far from over despite being dropped from the shorter formats of the game.
Hayden has made 161 one-day and nine Twenty20 appearances for his country.
"This would have been the decision whatever Matthew Hayden was doing in Test cricket," Hilditch said of Hayden's non-selection.
"It's obviously unfortunate for Matthew and it wasn't an easy thing to tell him - it never is."
He added: "But as far as Matthew's concerned we thought that the time was right to move on in Twenty20 cricket and in one-day cricket it's our view that he wasn't going to get to the 2011 World Cup."
Hilditch says Hayden's immediate Test future will not be decided until early next month when the selection panel, which also includes the opener's former Test team-mates David Boon and Merv Hughes, meets to select the squad for the three-Test series against the Proteas in South Africa.
"There comes a time in everybody's career, he's been such a great player," Hilditch said of Hayden.
"There's no doubt, and I've made it very clear, that our advanced plans were for Matthew Hayden to go through to the end of the Ashes (series) - that would be our ideal outcome."
"We've got to sit down as a selection panel and make a decision whether that's the way we want to go."
Despite Hayden's lean summer is which he amassed just 149 runs in five Tests at an average of 16, Hilditch endorsed the embattled opener's most recent performances at the SCG where he managed scores of 31 and 39.
"It was a difficult wicket," Hilditch said.
"My view is he played pretty well in both innings, more so probably in the second innings."
